Why
kiln-dried material?
K-N Cypress Log Homes is the only major
cypress log home manufacturer that kiln-dries its logs. Why?
Because over time the moisture content of every wood specie
will seek to match the ambient moisture content of the surrounding
atmosphere. This may take years, and during that period of
time the wood
shrinks as it dries. That is why all commercial grades of construction
lumber and finish material are kiln dried.
Air dried
logs can shrink as much as 1"-3" in an 8’ wall during
the 3-5 years following stacking. Moreover, different logs with different moisture
contents will shrink different amounts. This can cause many construction problems
and become unsightly. Kiln drying the logs, the signature of a log home, obviates
the vast majority of shrinkage problems.
Some will
say that kiln drying of logs damages the structural integrity
of the wood. If that were so, why are all commercial grades of
lumber and finish
material
kiln dried? Many non-cypress manufacturers kiln dry their logs. If you have
any question about the matter, ask any forester, any lumber supplier, or
any building
contractor if he would not rather have kiln dried material in his personal
home.
